In recent years, trampolines have become very popular with all age groups and many families have them in the garden for children to play on. Trampolines for home use are generally round, and consist of a large piece of material stretched over a metal frame and held in place by many strong springs. As the person jumps up and down on the trampoline, the springs stretch and contract and this is what provides the bounce. Inuit people of North America used a type of trampoline centuries ago, but the modern version was invented by an acrobat in the 1930s. Trampolines sold for garden use are safe, but it is wise to spend extra to get the netting that goes around the sides to protect children from falling off. Putting the trampoline on grass is much better than on concrete or another hard surface.

Benefits of Trampolining

As well as being great fun, trampolining can have health benefits too. It improves balance, rhythm and coordination, and as it increases the heart rate and works muscle groups it’s a good cardio vascular work out too. Bouncing helps improve bone density, which may lead to less fractures or bone problems in later life, and as it is low impact, it is much easier on the joints as activities such as aerobics or jogging. The bouncing action has also been shown to have an effect on the lymphatic drainage system, which helps get rid of toxins, viruses and dead cells from the body. It boosts confidence and makes people feel good about themselves, and trampolining has also been used to help children with autism improve their well being and take part in a social activity with other members of the family.

Much of the clothing that was originally designed for sporting use has crossed over into the fashion mainstream, and is especially popular with teenagers. Items such as hooded tops, trainers and t shirts are an essential part of everyone’s wardrobe and the items made by the large companies such as Nike, Puma and Adidas are particularly prized and are as desirable as the designer clothing brands. Endorsement by major sports stars and stars of the entertainment world brings this sort of fashion to an even wider audience. The sports companies’ logos are known the world over and the Nike tick logo and Puma cat are recognisable even without the wording to accompany them. Sporting clothing is widely sold in fashion stores and online, and there is no need to make a special trip to a sports shop to pick up something new to wear.

Items of Sport Fashion Clothing

Starting from the top, a baseball cap was originally designed to be worn to shade the eyes of baseball players, but is now popular across the world as a fashion item. Moving further down, items like running vests, tracksuits, football shirts and hooded tops are bought nowadays as pure fashion items, and people who never set foot in a gym or on a running track get great pleasure out of wearing the famous brands. Footwear is the biggest area of cross over between sport and fashion, with companies constantly bringing out new shoes to keep up with both the latest fashion trends in colours and styles as well as developments in technology to make the shoes better for serious sports people.

Traditional roller skates have wheels arranged in pairs, two at the front of the boot and two at the back. Inline skates developed in the 1980s as a more realistic substitute for an ice skate, and the wheels are arranged in a straight line down the middle of the sole of the boot. They are often known as Rollerblades, although this is the brand name of the company who first manufactured them. They were first developed for use by professional athletes training for long distance ice skating events, but quickly became popular with fitness fans and people looking for a fun way to get around. Nowadays, inline skates are popular with both children and adults, and a variety of different boots and wheel sizes are available for different uses. For recreational skating, inline skates are easy to buy in most large sporting goods stores or online. For more specialised skates, there are several stores online which stock a good variety of different types, but they tend to be more expensive.

Different inline skating disciplines

There are different things that skaters can do on their skates, and the type of skates bought will depend on the type of activity. Aggressive skating is popular in towns and cities, and involves the skaters going up ramps or performing jumps and tricks on their skates. Skaters often use the same parks and try to copy the moves of skateboarders. Speed skating, or inline racing, is done on a track and is a simple race between participants to see who can finish the distance in the quickest time. Artistic inline skating is much more like figure skating on ice, with skaters trying to be as graceful as possible, and show off their technique through jumps, complicated moves and routines to music.

Wipeout is a global broadcasting phenomenon and currently one of the most popular game shows across the globe. It consistently tops the ratings in both the UK and USA, and versions have been filmed for several other countries including Australia, Canada, Spain, Greece and India. It is billed as the world’s biggest obstacle course and is a family show, equally popular with children and adults. The show is funny and events are dreamt up for their comic effect, with shot of people falling into water or mud replayed for comic effect. The American version is filmed in California, and most of the other versions are filmed on a specially built course in Argentina. The show starts off with 24 contestants, who compete in four different rounds. Contestants are eliminated in each round, leaving four to compete in the grand final, where the fastest person to complete the course takes the prize money. Differences between the US and international versions are only minor, with different numbers progressing through the rounds. In the UK version, only three compete in the grand final.

The Different Rounds

During the first round of Wipeout the contestants try to complete an obstacle course as quickly as possible to make it through to the next round. Obstacles are over mud or water, so contestants who fail get wet, or muddy, or both. The best twelve contestants progress to the next round, where there are a variety of challenges designed to eliminate another six contestants. The final six are then put through one final challenge against each other to find the four finalists. In the final, each contestant competes individually to complete a giant obstacle course against the clock, and the winner is the fastest.

Takeshi’s Castle is a highly successful Japanese game show from the late 1980s which has spawned many different national versions shown across the globe. It starred the famous Japanese actor Takeshi Kitano, who played the part of a Count who set the challenges and tried to stop the contestants reaching his Castle. The show involved between 100 and 142 contestants in each episode. They competed in a variety of challenges and were gradually eliminated until the remaining contestants faced Count Takeshi in the final challenge. The player who managed to stop Takeshi was the show’s winner and scooped the prize money. The first series was low tech with small budgets, but as the show grew in popularity the sets and challenges became more elaborate. The show remains very popular and is a cult television hit.

Types of Challenges

There were many different types of challenges through the program and some were only featured once or twice on the show’s run. Most games were played over mud or water, so that when a contestant failed they got wet or dirty. Only contestants who completed the challenges went through to the next event. Most games also featured Takeshi’s assistants who would throw things or fire water at the contestants to make things more difficult and try to push them or force them to fall into the water. Most of the games required a good level of physical fitness, as well as good balancing and agility skills to avoid the pitfalls. The vast majority of contestants failed the challenges, which was all part of the entertainment and factor and the reason that each episode started with so many people. The show was as much about comedy as it was about serious sport, and around the globe it is often found showing on comedy channels.

American Gladiator is a very popular TV show which sees amateur contestants take on each other and the professional Gladiators in tests of strength, stamina and agility. It was originally shown in the early to mid 1990s, and was remade in 2008 with a similar format. It is no longer being produced, but talks are ongoing to revive it using the same concept and games. The series featured heats then the grand final, when the winning amateurs were crowned as champions and received their prize money. Contestants of both sexes competed. Competitors built up points by competing against the Gladiators in events during the show, and then competed against each other in the grand finale, called the Eliminator.

American Gladiator events

There were many different events in the program throughout its run. One of the most popular was Powerball, where the contestants had to place colored balls into a special tube, while avoiding the Gladiators. In Hang Tough, the contestant had to make their way across a course of hanging rings while avoiding the Gladiator. During the Joust event both the Gladiator and the competitor had large pugil sticks, which they used to try and knock each other off a bridge suspended above the arena. One of the most dramatic events was the Wall, where the contestants had to climb as quickly as possible up the vertical wall, with the Gladiators in hot pursuit. The show always finished with the Eliminator, a head to head contest between the two competitors on an assault course around the arena. Points scored earlier were used to determine which contestant started first. The winner of the Eliminator then progressed to the next round of the competition, which followed the same format until they got to the Final.

A Rollerball is also known as Powerball or Gyrotwister, and it’s a small device designed to tone up lower arm muscles and improve grip strength. The Poweball is a tennis ball sized plastic shell around a free-spinning smaller ball. Users start the smaller ball spinning with a cord or their thumb, and once the ball is moving it can be made to go faster by rotating the wrist in either a clockwise or counter clockwise motion. Balls are available in a range of different weights and sizes, and are extensively used to treat conditions such as arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome. It is also useful for musicians, or people who have previously broken bones and are trying to rebuild the strength in their arms and wrists. Sportspeople who take part in sports where a swing is important such as tennis or golf, find that using a powerball will increase distance they can hit the ball, as well as helping them hit it straighter and with more accuracy. The product is small and portable, meaning that it is easy to take in a bag or pocket and to be used at times where traditional exercise is not appropriate, such as on a train or in another confined space. The most commonly sold balls are lightweight and suitable for use by both adults and children.

How to use the Rollerball

Some of the more advanced versions of the ball come with a revolution counter so players can see how many revolutions per minute the ball is spinning at. The digital display stores the top score, and players try to beat this. Most models also have lights which flash faster and brighter as the ball spins faster, again encouraging the user to work their wrist muscles harder.

The sport of lacrosse was originally played by the native American people and is now popular across North America and beyond. It is played on a field between two teams of 10 players, who use sticks with nets on the end to try to propel a small rubber ball into the opposing team’s goal. The sport is very physically demanding, and to play you need to be very fit. The sport is played by both men and women, and there are a few differences between the sports for the two sexes. Less contact is allowed in the women’s game and less protective equipment is worn. Men wear body protection and helmets, women just wear a mouth guard to protect their teeth. Lacrosse has a popular College league in the United States, and the current champions are Duke Blue Devils from Durham in North Carolina. Lacrosse isn’t an Olympic sport, but there are World Championships held every 4 years. The United States are the reigning champions.

Rules of the game

Each team consists of 10 players; a goalkeeper, 3 defenders, 3 attackers and 3 midfielders. All have lacrosse sticks, but the defenders usually have larger sticks than the attackers. The field is 100 metres long and each goal is 5.5 metres wide. Most matches last for 60 minutes, broken into 4 quarters of 15 minutes each, although youth and college games are slightly shorter. Scoring is simply one point for a goal, and the team with the most goals at the end of the match wins. If a player commits a foul they are removed from the pitch for a short time and the team plays on without them until they return.

Parkour, or house running, developed in the inner city areas of Paris in France. It is a sort of urban obstacle course, where runners climb walls, jump across gaps and try to get to the end of the course as quickly as possible. Because the main idea of the sport is to try to get across obstacles, house running is most commonly done in dense inner city areas where there are plenty of walls, stairs and buildings. Another similar sport is free running which developed from parkour but involves more acrobatic moves. The attractions of house running for most people are that you do not need any special clothing, and as you run through the city, there is no special equipment to buy or entry fees for sports centres. The sport has a reputation for being dangerous, but leaping from building to building is only a tiny part of the sport. It is most popular with teenagers and young adults, mostly men. There is a world wide network of runners, and regular meetings and competitions held around the world, but mostly in European cities.

House running has been given lots of coverage in the media, and many video games use moves from the sport. It has been featured in television commercials, and scenes in a recent James Bond movie uses the urban setting to recreate the sport for a dramatic chase.

Benefits of House Running

Apart from the obvious benefit of helping participants keep fit and healthy, house running has been shown to develop spatial awareness, and critical thinking, as runners have to use the space available to them creatively and in the most efficient way possible in order to get through it quickly. It can also increase self confidence and this can have a positive effect in other areas of the runner’s life.
